OccasionGenius originally began as PartyRVA (RVA is for “Richmond, VA”) on January 1, 2015 as the go-to platform connecting people planning private events and the local businesses that host them.
Nate Marcus, the founder, was an iron chef team building instructor at a local cooking school, and he heard again and again from corporate team organizers that they needed better ideas for their next event.
In 2015, its first year, PartyRVA helped 77,000 locals find unique private event opportunities. Its innovative platform won 3 awards including Best Regional Startup 2015 in the i.e.* Competition, Best New Startup in the START!Peninsula 4.0, and Best Pitch in Capital One Labs. PartyRVA was selected by Lighthouse Labs RVA Accelerator to become ready for national growth.
In 2016, the platform was accelerated by the DC I-Corps Regional Training Program and included in Virginia’s promising Startup Spotlight Alley by RVA Venture Forum. The rebrand launched in September 2016 as OccasionGenius, a platform that sprawled events, parties and dates - with features that make its users feel like a genius while planning.
In 2017 OccasionGenius recognized that the highest engagement from users were those looking for "date night" ideas each weekend. Engaged users said they most enjoyed using the platform to discover events. User discovery showed that users yearned for a resource that was both comprehensive and personalized. "I wish I could sign in to get event recommendations -- like Amazon or Netflix," our team heard again and again. OccasionGenius pivoted to embrace its new path as a event discovery technology company, and created interest genomes, algorithms and tagging formulas to be the best and smartest way to connect people to events.
Nate discovered the need for a directory of private event ideas when he met with corporate event planners while teaching Iron Chef Corporate Challenges.
After launching an MVP called PartyRVA in 2015 in Richmond, VA, Nate raised a 6-figure round to rebrand to OccasionGenius. Nate’s’s platform was awarded first place by the i.e.* Competition, and second place at both START!Peninsula 4.0 and Capital One Labs.
Nate is an alumnus of two accelerators, Lighthouse Labs RVA and the DC I-Corps Regional Training Program.
Nate has been a pre-accelerator mentor at VCU and is passionate about helping private events planners discover hidden gems for truly unique events.
